There’s something special about nothing special.

I like to capture people in their environment, usually unawares, immersed in a daily activity that may seem unremarkable to the subject but to the viewer is unfamiliar and endearing. I like to paint the streets where people wander or the houses they live in, their yards, their pets. Inside people’s houses I like to portray people’s familiarity with their private surroundings, the items they acquire, the intimacy of their activities, moments and feelings frozen in time. A record of a fleeting moment, somewhat like a photograph but recorded with the energy of brush to canvas. Carefully and thoughtfully solving the problem of how to represent each element with paint, colour and expression yet still fully recognisable.

I like to explore the contemporary lives of people in cultures around the world. How and where people live and work, the weather, their clothing and the architecture of their buildings and homes. I have a keen interest in how places around the world are identifiable by their infrastructure, bricks and mortar, signage, etc and how the inhabitants look and operate within these surroundings on a perfectly average day.
